By the end of the session, all learners will be able to:

  1. Understand how well-considered planning and provision supports children’s educational and developmental progress. (K3.1)
  2. Explain the purpose of observation, assessment and planning to support children’s progress. (K3.2)

Much of the content from this performance outcome will
support the delivery of Element 8 & 9 from year 1.

Starter - Connect to Year 1
In pairs or small groups can you define the following terms:
- Observation
- Assessment
- Planning

I would like everyone take write individualised notes in their own notebook.

Extension - Use a different coloured pen to begin adding to your answer.

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

Whole group mind map

As a group lets establish the importance of observation & different forms of observations that can take place.
(Reflect on Element 8 & 9 from year 1)

Follow on task (K3.1)
On google classroom, I have set an assignment for K3.1.
You have been allocated 20 minutes to complete this task well.

  1. You need extended sentences to justify your points.
  2. Use of good research that is valid with accurate harvard referencing.
  3. Remember completing these assessment tasks allow's tutor to engage in 'assessment' for students.

The observation cycle
Why and how do we utilise the planning cycle?
The three elements of planning for observations and assessments work cohesively together.
The intention of doing so it understand the child on an individual basis.
"The unique child"
It's important to remember children grow fast, an observation from last month may now be out dated.
Key information when planning:
 - Write the date and time of the start of your observation.
- Age of the child
- Name of the recorded (your name)
- Write in short sentences but in detail.
- Note when the observation has finished.

How observations can vary
Short formative assessments
This type of planning is daily or weekly and it provides the practitioners and parents of their child's development.
You will still need to link to milestones from framework grading (Development Matters 2023).
Long term planning
This type of planning is a yearly review of the child's learning and development.
These can often influence and support summative assessments such as: EYFS profile or 2 year old check.
This should include strategies and approaches used within supporting the child.
In the moment planning.
Understanding the importance of child led or child initiated activity is important. This is known as in the moment planning when a child is seen to spontaneously achieve a milestone or goal.
Snap shot approach is often very supportive of this.

Why is this important to me?
Assignment 3 is based on your abilities to observe! (snapshot example)

Understanding the Project brief
As part of performance outcome 3 you will also complete mini projects to demonstrate your knowledge of the skills criteria for this element.

For project 1 the evidence required is:
  • Practice observations on a child with links to Development Matters 2023.(Sociogram / checklist / child tracker)
  •  Witness statement between you are your supervisor discussing the importance of formal assessments . Could be either 2 year old, reception baseline assessment, EYFS profile.
  • SEND support plan to be created to understand how to support each individual's needs.

Everyone will need a new parent slip & permission from your setting's manager.
